How to choose chevron tile
Start at the wall, not the tile. Chevron only looks right when its points line up with something.
- Find the point line. The V-points form a straight line, and the eye follows it. Center that line on the range hood, the faucet or the middle of a vanity, then work out to the edges. On a floor, run the points along the room's long axis, toward the main view.
- Check that you have both hands. Loose chevron pieces usually come as left- and right-angled parallelograms that alternate. Confirm the box mix, or order both, so you are not short of one hand halfway up the wall.
- Sheets or pieces. Mosaic sheets set fast and hold the points in line, which is why they dominate backsplashes. Individual pieces add labor but let the pattern scale up, which a large floor or tall shower wall needs.
- Joints. Points meet cleanly only when joints stay consistent. Narrow joints on rectified pieces keep the V sharp; wide joints blur it.
- Overage. Every edge is an angled cut. Plan as you would for herringbone or a diagonal layout, about 15% extra.
If the angled ends feel too busy, herringbone tile gives a softer woven zigzag from plain rectangles. For simpler shapes on mesh, see mosaic tile.
Questions
What is chevron tile?
Chevron tile is a parallelogram-shaped tile, or a mosaic of them, with ends cut at an angle so neighboring pieces meet in a sharp, continuous V. Rows of V-points form a zigzag that runs in one direction. It differs from herringbone, where square-ended rectangles butt into each other and form a stepped zigzag.
How hard is chevron tile to install?
Loose pieces are demanding; mosaic sheets are not. With individual chevron tiles, every V-point has to line up across the whole wall, and a small error grows row by row. Mosaic sheets arrive with the points already aligned, so a backsplash goes up close to the pace of a standard mosaic. Either way, every perimeter cut is angled.
How much extra chevron tile should I order?
Order about 15% over the measured area, the same as herringbone or a diagonal layout. Angled cuts at every wall, cabinet and outlet create more scrap than a straight lay. If loose pieces come as separate left- and right-hand versions, add the overage to each hand, not just to the total.
Which way should a chevron tile pattern point?
Point the V toward what you want people to look at, or along the direction you want the room to feel longer. On a backsplash, vertical points draw the eye up toward the hood, while horizontal points widen a short wall. On a floor, points running away from the main doorway pull the eye down the room.
How much does chevron tile cost?
Chevron Tile at Sara Zoha runs from $12.59 to $60.25 per square foot, tile only; half of the 32 styles fall between $21.55 and $45.85. Every product page shows both prices and a calculator that rounds your room up to whole boxes.
What sizes does chevron tile come in?
The most common sizes here are 1x4 (8) and 1x8 (1) inches. Thickness runs from 6.1 to 10 mm. Larger formats mean fewer grout lines but need a flatter floor; small formats and mosaics follow curves and shower slopes.
Which finishes are available in chevron tile?
Matte (12), Polished (12) and Honed (7). Matte hides water spots and is the usual pick for floors; polished reflects light but is slippery when wet, so keep it to walls and dry floors; honed is smooth without shine and suits floors and showers.
What colours does chevron tile come in?
white (19), gray (8), beige (2), black (1), brown (1) and blue (1). Colour reads differently on every screen, so order a $4.99 sample of your shortlist and look at it in the room, morning and evening.
