24x24 Tile

24x24 tile is a square large format size: each piece covers a nominal 4 sq ft, and the floor has half the grout joint length of a 12x12 layout. It suits open-plan rooms and frost-rated patios. Decide layout and flatness: a straight grid or 1/3 offset, over a substrate with no dip beyond 1/8 in per 10 ft.

How to choose 24x24 tile

A 24x24 floor looks best when the layout is planned around the room, not the box. Work through these steps.

  1. Check the room's proportions. In large and open rooms, 24x24 reads calm and expansive. In a small bathroom, the same tile can leave more cut pieces than full ones, so dry-lay it first or compare 12x24 tile.
  2. Choose grid or offset. A straight grid suits square tiles and keeps corners aligned. A 1/3 offset adds movement. Avoid a half offset: with edges past 18 in, the stagger should stay at 33% or less unless the maker approves more. Diagonal layouts work but add cuts at every wall.
  3. Prepare the floor. At 24 in per side the tile is large format, so the base must be ground or leveled until its dips are 1/8 in or less over 10 ft and 1/16 in or less over 24 in. A wood subfloor may also need extra stiffness. Set it in a large-and-heavy-tile mortar and back-butter every 24x24 for full contact.
  4. Pick the edge and joint. Rectified 24x24 can go down with 1/16 in joints; pressed 24x24 squares call for a minimum 1/8 in joint. Narrow joints make the floor read as one surface but expose any unevenness.
  5. Decide indoors or out. Porcelain pavers are often made in 24x24 at 20 mm thick for dry-laying on gravel, or for pedestals after a structural check of the roof or deck by a qualified contractor or engineer; see outdoor tile. Indoors, standard-thickness tile goes down in thinset.

Order about 15% overage, the usual figure for large format tile. For longer rectangles and slab-style sizes, compare large format tile.

Questions

What size grout line should I use with 24x24 tile?

Plan on 1/16 in for rectified 24x24 tile; pressed, cushion-edge tile needs at least 1/8 in. Then follow the maker's stated minimum. Wider joints hide small size differences, but they do not excuse an uneven floor, which still has to meet the 1/8 in per 10 ft flatness limit for large format tile. A grout color close to the tile keeps a big-tile floor looking calm.

How many 24x24 tiles come in a box?

Box counts vary by thickness and maker, so read the coverage figure on the product page. One 24x24 tile is nominally 4 sq ft, so dividing the sq ft per box by 4 gives the tile count. These tiles are heavy, so confirm the shipment weight and line up help for unloading before the delivery arrives.

Is 24x24 tile good for small rooms?

It can be, but it is one of the less forgiving sizes for a small room. Fewer grout lines make the floor look bigger, yet a narrow bathroom may end up with more cut tiles than full ones, and cutting around a toilet flange wastes a big tile. Dry-lay the tiles before setting, or step down to 12x24 if the layout looks choppy.

Should 24x24 tile be laid straight or on a diagonal?

Straight is easier and wastes less; a diagonal can make a narrow room feel wider but adds cuts along every wall. For square tiles, a straight grid keeps corners meeting cleanly, which is less prone to lippage than a half offset. If you stagger rows, shift each one by a third at most, since every edge here is longer than 18 in.

How much does 24x24 tile cost?

24x24 Tile at Sara Zoha runs from $3.55 to $71.65 per square foot, tile only; half of the 208 styles fall between $4.89 and $10.55. Tile sold by the box covers about 15.5 sq ft per box, so the per-box price is roughly $126.33 for a mid-priced style. Every product page shows both prices and a calculator that rounds your room up to whole boxes.

Which finishes are available in 24x24 tile?

Matte (102), Polished (58), Honed (21), Textured (11) and Natural Cleft (9). Matte hides water spots and is the usual pick for floors; polished reflects light but is slippery when wet, so keep it to walls and dry floors; honed is smooth without shine and suits floors and showers; textured gives extra grip outdoors and in wet areas.

What colours does 24x24 tile come in?

white (88), beige (49), gray (46), black (15), brown (2) and blue (2). Colour reads differently on every screen, so order a $4.99 sample of your shortlist and look at it in the room, morning and evening.

Can 24x24 tile go on floors, in showers or outside?

Of the 208 24x24 tiles, 138 are rated for floors, 141 for shower walls and 55 for shower floors, going by the makers' own ratings. Each product page has a 'Where this tile can go' panel; when a rating is not on file yet we say so instead of guessing. The Use filter narrows the grid to what fits your room.
